Computational Thinking as Future Thinking Process
My research focuses on applying computational thinking processes in SMEs.
So, what is Computational Thinking (CT)? CT is a “thought process involved in formulating problems and their solutions so that the solutions are represented in a form that can effectively be carried out by an information-processing agent.” In the context of CT, the term “information-processing agent” refers to a computer, machine, or human being that is capable of solving the formulated problem (Wing, 2006, 2010).
Wing’s (2010) claims that everyone can learn CT for every aspect of daily life. However, Ilic et al. (2018) note that Wing’s claim is contradicted, which is by far limited to the field of computer science. This has led Ilic et al. (2018) to express their opinion that future studies should investigate the practical utility of CT for real-world problems and its impact and relevance for different professions.
This research required a practical study to create applicable knowledge and provide an artefact for applying the knowledge to a real-world problem (Hevner et al., 2004). Therefore, this study uses the design science research paradigm (DSR) (Kuechler et al., 2017).
Focus Group Study with SMEs (2021)
CT main processes
Decomposition
Breaking a group of tasks or difficulties into smaller, more manageable components
Pattern Recognition
Identifying patterns in the characteristics, processes, or interactions inside a task or problem
Abstraction
Emphasizing critical information and omitting unnecessary ones
Algorithm
Presenting a task or problem’s solution as a series of step-by-step instructions
